When searching for the perfect diaper bag, your first consideration is storage. By "storage" we mean not just the capacity to carry all you need but also the organization of it as well. If you are a first-time mom, you may be surprised at the amount of stuff you're going to be hauling around to support both baby and you're needs. Here's our list of what you will typically find in a well-stocked bag:
1.Items for baby:
Diapers;wipes;rash cream;sacks for dirty diapers;changing pad;burp cloths;change of clothes;
nursing cover;bottle(s) or sippy cup(s);binkies and toys;sunscreen;snacks
2.Items for mom:
water bottle;hand sanitizer;snacks;wallet;cell phone;keys;sunglasses;makeup and sunscreen;reading material
A great bag will be able to fit all or at least most these things in a way that makes them easily accessible (and easy to see when you need to restock essentials like diapers and wipes). We found that bags with exterior storage like insulated pockets for bottles and snacks as well as additional compartments for cell phone, changing pad, diapers, and wipes to be particularly functional. The Fashion Mummy Maternity Diaper Bag is a good example of such a bag.
Keep in mind that you're mileage may vary when it comes to storage needs. For example, you will need a larger bag if you have more than one in diapers, or for overnight and multi-day trips. A large bag like the Multifunctional Fashion Mummy Diaper Bags is ideal if you'll need more storage on a regular basis.
3.Here are a few key things to keep in mind when searching for a non-traditional diaper bag:
Avoid leather.
Spilled milk and formula do not bode well for your new leather bag. Look for bags with cotton or polyester lining. Bonus if they’re machine washable!
Polyester interior lining is key.
More likely than not you’ll spill milk, snacks and who knows else in your diaper bag. Anything with an easily wipeable interior will make your life a bit easier.
Avoid velcro
It’s super hard to clean, and you’re not going to want to rip that bag open with a sleeping baby nearby!
Pockets are great but not crucial.
The more pockets, the better. You’ll feel more organized being able to have a place for everything baby needs. However, don’t let that cute open tote with no pockets steer you away from purchasing. There are great inserts like the ToteSavvy that can be used to turn any tote into one with great compartments.
The lighter the better.
You’re going to be carrying quite a bit in your diaper bag — change of clothes, bottles, snacks, diapers, wipes (you get the idea). The lighter the bag, the more stuff you’ll be able to comfortable carry!

A:Moira Lomas,3 kids in just over 3 year.
I had the best diaper bag. It opened out so there was a flat changing mat to change the baby on. It had a removable cover on it, which velcroed in so it could be removed and washed. And really good pockets - it opened like a 't' so the change mat was the main part and then it had two sides where they diapers and other stuff went. And it looked like a normal bag - had pockets on the outside for my own stuff
Only bad thing was it was a boring grey colour.

It would be stylish but practical. Would have good compartments and enough room for a small changing mat, wet wipes, a few nappies a change of clothes the odd toy car etc. But also a good section for my stuff like keys, phone etc.
the other MUST is that it fits over the handle bars of the buggy - in my experience this is the only reason to use a 'changing bag' as we call them in the uk not a normal bag.
for me sippy cup etc go under the buggy/pushchair.

Factors that should be taken into consideration when looking for a diaper bag:
Size of the diaper bag
Shoulder strap or backpack?
Space in the diaper bag
I believe that these factors should be taken into consideration when looking for the perfect diaper bag.

Here's my checklist. I have a two and a half year old and a five month old. My diaper bag is a small Vera Bradley backpack, but I think the larger ones are great; they even have the plastic changing pad someone above mentioned.
1 Wipes Box
8 Size 3 Diapers for my infant (I like to always have a one day supply)
3 Pairs Underwear for my preschooler
2 Full Outfits for my infant
2 Pairs Pants/Shorts for my preschooler
1 Sippy Cup full of water for my preschooler
2 Snacks - Granola Bars or Aunt Anne's Bunny Crackers

It would need an impermeable, washable section (ideally easily removable) to put in the dirty diapers. Maybe with a dispenser of plastic bags.
Also, small pockets for things like diaper pins, cream, etc.
